International comparison of fossil power efficiency and CO2 intensity

Update 2015

Published: 01/04/2016

In this study on behalf of the Mitsubishi Research Institute, the periodic annual report ‘International comparison of fossil power efficiency and CO2 intensity’ was updated with data for the year 2012 from the IEA Energy Balances (2014 edition).

The report presents three analyses based on this data:

  1. Generating efficiency and associated benchmark indicators for gas-, oil- and coal-fired power plants and total fossil-fired power generation
  2. CO2 emissions intensity per fossil fuel source (coal, oil, gas) and for total fossil power generation, as well as the corresponding CO2 reduction potential
  3. Share of renewables and nuclear in public power production

The analysis was carried out for the following countries/regions: Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway combined), South Korea, the United Kingdom together with Ireland, and the United States.
