Integrating Variable Renewables in Poland

Published: 09/03/2018

The Polish electricity system is on the verge of major changes. Modernisation efforts regarding grid infrastructure and the retirement of parts of the largely coal-based generation fleet will open opportunities to prepare the system for larger shares of variable renewable energies.

Fast technology cost decline for wind and solar in recent years and close-to-zero marginal costs of these energy resources as well as their contribution to energy independence will likely accelerate their deployment in the country.

This report, prepared by Ecofys, a Navigant company, for Agora Energiewende and Forum Energii, presents commercially available options to facilitate the integration of the growing shares of variable renewables in the specific context of upcoming changes in the Polish power system. Rather than formulating final recommendations, it provides the ground for a fact-based debate, structured around eight main areas of action.
