Impact measurement for Alliander

Ecofys, a Navigant Company, and partner TruePrice supported the Dutch grid operator Alliander with the identification of their impact level for the society. The impacts identified were based on the IR-Framework of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC).

The project started in 2015 with the analysis, quantification and report on the social impact of three selected projects:

  • The social impact of the construction of heating networks;
  • the placement of smart metres; and
  • the Step2Work programme for unemployed people. 

In 2016, Ecofys enabled several divisions of Alliander to carry out the impact analysis themselves, thus embedding the knowledge within the organisation. Looking into all of Alliander’s activities, both as an individual company and based on their position in the energy value chain, Ecofys assessed and analysed the most important impacts. The results were distributed internally and externally, e.g. in the 2015 and 2016 editions of Alliander’s annual report.

Impact measurement provided new insights into the consequences of Alliander’s activities, including the impacts on the intellectual, social and relationship, human and natural capitals. The impact measurements for Alliander‘s projects compelled Alliander to make carefully-considered assumptions about the expected CO2 effects, avoided investments, and costs. In 2017, Alliander will seek to further improve and expand the impact model, devoting more attention to the social and human impacts. Working with other network companies, Alliander wants to lay the foundations for a broad-based sector model. The model will also be used to enhance decision-making on new developments and investments.
