Auctions for renewable energy support

Final report of the AURES project

Published: 10/01/2018

Ecofys, a Navigant company, is part of the AURES consortium which investigated the applicability of auctions for renewable energy support under different market conditions in European countries. The final report, "Auctions for renewable energy support - Taming the beast of competitive bidding", summarises the key findings from three years of research and dialogue with stakeholders and policy makers.

The focus of the AURES project has been to answer questions like:

  • When are RES auctions a good idea, i.e. under which circumstances are they preferable to e.g. administratively set tariffs or quotas?
  • How should RES auctions be designed to achieve desired outcomes?
  • What design options exist, and what are their benefits and challenges?
  • Which design should be chosen for a particular auction implementation depending on certain policy goals and market situation?

This final report covers a discussion of findings and insights on these and other questions related to renewable energy auctions. Download it from:
