Saving energy

Bringing down Europe’s energy prices for 2020 and beyond

Published: 27/02/2013

The actual scale of benefits of energy savings is often underestimated. In this paper, we show that energy savings do not only bring direct cost savings; they also indirectly reduce energy prices. In other words, consumers would use fewer units of energy, and the price of the units used would be lower than they would otherwise. For 2020, it  is found that around €200 million total yearly net savings can be achieved by consumers, including the effects of lower prices. If ambitious energy savings would continue to be pursued until 2030, we expect that  total net savings are on the order of  €250 billion per year. In the paper we explain how these total net savings are obtained.
