Deep renovation of buildings

An effective way to decrease Europe’s energy import dependency

Published: 21/05/2014

It is widely acknowledged that renovating dwellings and commercial buildings in the EU will have a large impact on the use of energy. On behalf of Eurima, the European Insulation Manufacturers Association, Ecofys prepared a study on the potential of deep renovation of buildings to decrease Europe’s energy import dependency.

According to the report, buildings use a significant 61% of all imported gas and a deep renovation programme across Europe could reduce the sector’s energy imports by over 60% by 2030 and 100% by 2050. In addition, the report demonstrates –based on previous research and literature- that other options to reduce import dependencies which focus on the supply side are not cheaper than deep renovation of buildings and create other dependencies or risks.
