China and US increase climate ambition

Climate Action Tracker Policy Brief

Published: 12/11/2014

The Climate Action Tracker has undertaken an initial assessment of the recent announcements by the United States and China’s new pledges and proposals on emissions reductions for 2025 and 2030, in the context of the present international negotiations for a new climate agreement to be adopted at the end of 2015.

The announcement is an important political development as it begins to close the gap between the countries’ previous pledges and the emissions limits needed to hold global warming below 2°C. Yet it is also clear, that both countries could significantly improve over these new pledges. Adopting world best practice would enable substantial improvements, as outlined in the Climate Action Tracker’s update last month, which looked at the potential for both countries.

The Climate Action Tracker is an independent science-based assessment that tracks the emission commitments and actions of countries. It is a joint project of Ecofys, Climate Analytics, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and NewClimate Institute.
