Carbon impact of WWF's Climate Savers Programme

Published: 09/05/2012

Over thirty major corporate members of WWF's Climate Savers Programme succeeded in avoiding over 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted over the period 1999 up till 2011. This is one of the main findings of a review conducted by Ecofys and commissioned by WWF International. The figure is equivalent to double the current annual emissions of Switzerland.

The review underlines the potential for expanding corporate efforts to cut emissions. Ecofys calculates that the cumulative reduction in emissions could exceed 350 million tonnes in 2020. If other major corporations in the same business sectors followed the leadership of Climate Savers companies, between 500 and 1000 million tonnes of emissions could be avoided annually in 2020, an amount roughly comparable to the current annual emissions of Germany.
