Biofuels for aviation

Published: 27/03/2014

As aviation is the fastest growing transport modality worldwide, its GHG emissions would increase with 600% by 2050 if no measures were taken. Therefore, the industry has committed to halve its emissions by 2050 compared to 2005 levels. This ambition can only be achieved through a large role for bio jet fuels.

Ecofys advised the Dutch government on how it can stimulate the uptake of bio jet fuels in the Netherlands. International initiatives and ideas have been studied and a broad group of Dutch stakeholders and international experts was consulted through interviews and a workshop. The research focussed on the practical and economic aspects and development pathways for large scale application of bio jet fuels.

With our recommendations as a starting point, seven Dutch stakeholders have signed a Letter of Intent in November 2013. The Letter explains how they will scale up the deployment of bio jet fuels in the Netherlands. Ecofys supported these stakeholders in the process towards setting ambitions and defining individual efforts in the Letter of Intent.
