Barriers to implementation of CCS

Capacity Constraints

Published: 16/12/2014

In this study, commissioned in 2010 by IEAGHG, Ecofys assess possible supply chain constraints that could arise if Carbon Capture and Storage is deployed according to the implementation scheme in the IEA CCS Roadmap. The study looks at physical constraints (equipment, materials) as well as those in skills and services (human resources) while focussing on the future capacity of the supply chain for CCS technologies. In the report we provide several recommendations to avoid constraints. For example, reduce upfront investment risks for reservoir exploration and transport infrastructure or prevent capture supplier concentration. In addition, the build-up of institutional knowledge is very important; specialised knowledge bears the risk to be pulled away towards industrial activities with higher added value, like oil and gas exploitation.
