Aluminium Stewardship Initiative Performance Standard

Principles and Criteria

Published: 13/01/2015

This Standard aims to improve the aluminium sector’s environmental performance. The report defines the environmental, social and governance principles and criteria applicable to the aluminium value chain. In the near future, it will be complemented by Indicators, Verifiers and Means of Verification. The Standard will be implemented through a third-party certification system managed by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.

Transparency, material stewardship, greenhouse gas emissions, effluents and waste, biodiversity, and human rights are among the key issues it addresses. The Standard has been developed by a group of 28 organisations, including representatives of the aluminium value chain and of civil society: i.a. BMW Group, Hydro, Nestlé Nespresso SA and Rio Tinto Alcan, along with Fauna & Flora International, Forest Peoples Programme, IUCN and Ecofys.
