Future energy markets and the role of network operators

Due to its geographical location, Switzerland plays a central role in the European electricity system. As a result of changes in the energy supply of various countries in the integrated European grid, Switzerland’s grid infrastructure is experiencing additional pressure. Furthermore, Switzerland’s Energy Strategy 2050, which strives for a further development of renewable energy sources and a re-duction of power consumption, affects the country’s national transmission and distribution networks.

In this study, Ecofys and Swiss Economics analyse different solutions and models for the interaction between markets and the distribution network taking into account the multiple applications of decen-tralised flexibility options. The recommendations for action derived from the analysis are a basis for further development of the regulatory framework.
