Mitigation Momentum

The Mitigation Momentum project aims to support the development of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) by contributing to the design of NAMA proposals in developing countries and fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange within the global NAMA community. The project is a collaboration between Ecofys and the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), supported by the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment.

Mitigation Momentum has successfully supported the development of NAMAs in Chile, Kenya, Indonesia, Peru and Tunisia since 2012 with some of the NAMAs now moving towards implementation. The NAMA Mitigation Momentum helped develop in Chile was one of the first five NAMAs world-wide to receive funding (through the NAMA Facility). Going forward, the project continues to support partner countries with the development of NAMA proposals as well as finance and implementation strategies. New partner countries since 2014 include Georgia, Ethiopia and Thailand.

A central feature of the project is the publication of the Annual Status Report on NAMAs as well as policy and research papers on key issues in the context of NAMAs and the international climate finance and policy regime. One of the recent publications presented the topic "Connecting multilateral climate finance to mitigation projects: A guide to the multilateral climate finance landscape of NAMAs".
