Mayors Adapt – Climate change adaptation at city level

Supporting the European Commission DG climate action, a consortium led by Ecofys has developed and launched an initiative for climate change adaptation in European cities. The initiative called “Mayors Adapt” is an EU funded climate change adaptation initiative within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors and aimed at all European cities. As a result of their commitment, local authorities receive tailored support with access to a dedicated Help Desk, information on networking events aiming to promote good practice through peer-to-peer learning, and technical guidance and supporting materials.

The first phase of the project focussed on the strategic design, the launch and accompanying outreach. The consortium held stakeholder workshops, developed the political commitment and a first adaptation knowledge guidance. Liaising with partner initiatives, presentating at events, online communication and a dedicated website continue to raise awareness. The initiative won over 200 signatories to date and thus overachieved the Commission's target.

The second phase of the project builds upon the work carried out and supports the integration of Mayors Adapt into the EU’s Covenant of Mayors, creating an integrated platform for both mitigation and adaptation under the name Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy.

The consortium led by Ecofys is comprised of the city network Climate Alliance, communications spe-cialists IFOK, adaptation experts Fresh Thoughts, an association of local and regional governments CEMR, and a network of major European cities EUROCITIES.
