Energy saving potential in data centres

The E-Plus Group, one of Germany’s mobile communication providers, asked Ecofys to develop detailed individual solutions to improve the efficiency of 16 of their core site data centres. The project was a follow up of a successful optimization of two comparable pilot sites. For the study the boundary conditions of every data centre including all individual components and settings were fed into a simulation model, which allowed the impacts (costs and savings) of different measures to be determined. The models had previously been calibrated with measured energy consumption. Many measures were actually implemented because they have shown significant saving potential as well as payback times of two years and less.
