International wind-resource website launched

Utrecht, The Netherlands, 14 March 2011 - A new international wind-resource website is being launched today by Ecofys at EWEA 2011 in Brussels, the major annual wind energy event of the European Wind Energy Association. The website at provides swift, easy and free access to important information for stakeholders in the wind energy business.

Users can click on countries on a world map to access national factsheets on the past development and current status of wind energy and its role in overall electricity supply. Paid services for logged-in customers at the website include wind power production forecasts and the wind energy index “Wind index” for specific wind farms.

The wind power production forecasts are obtained by applying client-specific wind farm characteristics to wind speed forecasts for the location of the wind farm. For the Netherlands and later other countries, the service also includes information in advance on the monetary effect of deviations of the actual wind power generation from the forecast when the electricity is sold for delivery next day on the day-ahead electricity market. Expressed in Euros, this helps operators to optimise their bidding process.

The "Wind index" reflects how much wind power was produced in the past period at the wind farm compared with the long-term average. It allows operators to judge whether the performance of their wind farms has been up to par.

The website also features interactive value maps for offshore wind in Northern Europe. These are designed for identifying the most financially attractive sites and examining the effects of key design decisions on the relative cost of energy.

“Our new wind-resource website is intended to give an overview of country wind resources for anyone with a broad interest in wind energy. At the same time, it provides access to vital wind power forecasts and historical wind power and electricity market data for the needs of specialists in the wind energy business,” comments Michiel Müller, unit manager Wind Energy at Ecofys.

Ecofys staff will be available to demonstrate the new wind-resource website and its capabilities at the company booth 12060, hall 12, at EWEA 2011.
