Ecofys launches BEAM² analysis tool

Cologne/Utrecht, 10 November 2010 - Buildings in Europe provide numerous opportunities to save energy and reduce CO2 emissions, but which measures are the most effective? Policy-makers, companies and other organisations are examining the contribution that buildings can make in meeting energy and climate targets. Ecofys, a consulting company with expertise in the field of energy efficiency, climate change and renewables, has updated and expanded their Built Environment Analysis Model – BEAM² - to assess and develop strategies for the built environment.

BEAM2 has added scope and flexibility for analysing energy, climate and cost features of the building stock at the city, country and regional level. The model can provide a comprehensive overview of energy demand and CO2 emissions as well as investment and operating costs for space heating and cooling, hot water and electricity for buildings throughout Europe. Parameters like demolition rate, new building activity, renovation measures and energy efficiency can be taken into account, allowing the model to calculate future developments under various scenarios. For instance, if energy efficiency requirements on buildings are tightened or refurbishment rates of buildings are increased, BEAM2 calculates the related effects i.e. compared with a business-as-usual case.

“The tool has been used to supply details on the current state of buildings and to provide insights on possible future scenarios, allowing us to design a practical set of measures for improvements in a logical and straightforward manner,” says Thomas Boermans, head of the Built Environment Strategies unit at Ecofys.

BEAM has been used already for strategy development and market analysis in projects with various clients, for instance, to support the European Commission with an impact assessment of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD recast). For the City of Hamburg’s “Scenario 2050”, BEAM was used to calculate two scenarios for heating energy demand in order to propose suitable measures to lower energy demand to comply with the City’s overall 80% CO2 reduction target by 2050.

Other BEAM users include national governments, European associations (EuroACE, Eurima), manufacturers and utilities.

BEAM2 is currently being used to develop a reference scenario for the German building stock on its way towards 40% CO2-mitigation by 2020 for the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS, commissioned by BBSR).
