Ecofys supports Mars Inc. in making supply chains climate resilient

Published: 26/09/2017

Ecofys, a Navigant company, has supported Mars Inc. in understanding the impacts of future climate change on their supply chain. The global food manufacturer recently released its Sustainable in a Generation Plan which describes Mars’ commitment to drive positive change through global efforts around renewable energy, sustainable operations and sourcing. This includes building a resilient supply chain in the face of climate impacts to promote sustainable growth.

Ecofys’ climate resilience experts assessed the latest climate science available for various geographic locations and identified the climate variables which are crucial to the continued quality and supply of a raw material. The team also undertook targeted interviews and assessed the adaptive capacity of the relevant stakeholder to cope with future climate changes.

With the results of this project the global sourcing teams in Mars Inc. understand how the impacts of a changing climate are directly relevant to their supply chains and which aspects of climate change will render the supply chain most vulnerable. The project provides Mars with accurate and in depth information to inform their approach to sourcing and their dialogue with key suppliers. Ecofys also identified a range of potential actions that could be undertaken to improve the resilience of the different actors in the supply chain, and potential working partners and relevant projects which are currently focussing on improving the resilience of the region to the impacts of climate change.
