Ecofys contributes to making renewables auctions fit for use in South East Asia

Published: 12/09/2017

In a new publication, Ecofys, a Navigant company, outlines how auctions for renewable energy can help to achieve the targets in the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) region. Ecofys provides an introduction to renewable energy (RE) auctions, explains common policy goals, highlights preconditions for an auction, gives an overview of key design elements, and explains the importance of institutional actors in auction implementation.

Ecofys’ work complements the comprehensive overview on experience with other renewable energy incentives in the ASEAN countries, including feed-in tariffs, self-consumption schemes, tax incentives and soft loans. The energy experts also conducted a comparative analysis across countries to identify best practices and lessons learned.

The study was prepared by Abt Associates for USAID under the Clean Power Asia Program. Ecofys experts Silvana Tiedemann and Ana Amazo presented the findings of the report and hosted a consultation session on renewables auctions for ASEAN member states at a regional workshop on RE incentives that was co-organized by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and USAID Clean Power Asia in Bangkok.
