Ecofys
sells carbon credits of CDM-projects
Ecofys has sold the climate benefits of two
renewable energy projects in India to the Dutch government, by means
of a tender procedure. Under the Kyoto treaty, the emission reduction
from the projects, totalling 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 over a ten-year
period, can be used by the Netherlands to comply with its own commitments.
At the same time, the amount the Netherlands pays for the “carbon
credits” enables realisation of the projects supported and
formulated by Ecofys, a wind farm, and a biomass plant.
Clean
Development Mechanism
The so-called Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was agreed in the
Kyoto Protocol. CDM-projects are renewable energy or energy saving
projects in developing countries which result in reduction of carbon
emissions. The government buys the emission reduction certificates,
the carbon credits, which contribute to the national emission reduction
target. With these CDM projects the Dutch government can realise
her climate policy in a cost efficient way.
India
Ecofys formulated and supported two CDM-projects in India: a wind
energy project and a biomass-based power generation plant. The first
concerns a 15 MW grid connected wind turbine project, in which twelve
new 1.25 MW sized wind turbine units will be installed in the Sankaneri
area. In total the project will result in 340,000 tonnes of carbon
reduction. This compensates for the annual emissions of 3,000 Dutch
households.
The biomass project involves the implementation of three biomass-based
power generation plants in Rajasthan, with a total capacity of 20
MW. Mustard crop residue is the primary fuel source of the power
plants and is abundantly available in the vicinity of the site.
The project results in a total emission reduction of 1,150,000 tonnes
CO2, compensating the annual emissions of more than 10,000 Dutch
households.
The electricity generated by both projects is supplied to the state
electricity boards and private industrial consumers.
