Energy consultant Ecofys has brought the concept of "greening hotels" to Turkey. Based on experiences with projects in the Caribbean and Spain, Ecofys and her Turkish partner AES are convinced that also in Turkey interesting opportunities for savings in energy and water usage for the hotel industry exist. A "greening" project would not only result in considerable cost savings but also in a more environmental friendly image, which is becoming increasingly important to tourists.

Savings up to 30%
Ecofys carried out feasibility studies for hotels that represent different types of accommodation, ranging from apartments to high-rise buildings and from budget to luxury hotels. The technical and financial options for energy and water savings were analysed, which indicated that energy savings of 30% can be reached. In order to realise these savings, simple measures can be taken that do not require a lot of investments. These include measures in the field of efficient lighting, air-conditioning and insulation. Applications such as solar water heating and seawater cooling often also present attractive and cost-effective ways to reduce energy costs.

Good opportunities in Turkey
Like the Caribbean and Spain, Turkey has a sunny climate and a thriving hotel industry. That's why Ecofys, together with partner AES, presented the concept to several hotels in the Antalya/Belek and Bodrum regions. The interest shown at the local seminars was very high. When implementing savings measures, Ecofys will work together with local companies like Sisecam AS.
