Ecofys study reveals promising biofuel potential for shipping

Biofuels are a promising substitute for conventional fossil fuels within the shipping sector. Replacing conventional fuels biofuels could enable maritime transport to become carbon neutral and possibly reduce the effect of ship emissions on local air quality. Biofuels also substantially reduce the dangers of harmful emissions into water, which can be crucial in case of shipping accidents like the recent Costa Concordia tragedy.

These are the main findings of the first broadscale investigation into the potential of using biofuels in shipping. The Ecofys study commissioned by the European Maritime Safety Agency also investigates which market barriers need to be addressed in order to accelerate the introduction of biofuels in the shipping sector. Surprisingly it is not technical aspects that present the biggest challenges but moreover policy and organizational issues.
