Opportunities for alternative fuels in the cement industry

Assessment of drivers and barriers for increased fossil fuel substitution in three EU Member States: Greece, Poland and Germany

The European Commission aims to highlight technically feasible options and improve the potential of Waste-to-Energy operations in the EU. One of these options is the co-processing of waste in the cement industry. In this study for CEMBUREAU (the European Cement Association), Ecofys has investigated how the European cement industry could contribute to Europe’s waste to energy capacity.

In order to account for the differences between EU Member States, Ecofys carried out three case studies as a display of different levels of maturity in terms of waste management and co-processing rates. The case studies represent Greece, Poland and Germany, and focus on the overall potential, the benefits as well as barriers and drivers of co-processing waste in cement plants.
