McDonald’s Europe – Green building guideline

Ecofys was able to support McDonald’s Europe in their ambition to build and operate more sustainable restaurants. In 2009 and 2010, Ecofys assisted McDonald’s Europe in establishing a customised green building guideline for existing and new stores. With no public framework in place, the challenge was to define an ambitious green building standard that can be applied in all countries McDonald’s Europe operates in. In a first step, we analysed existing international certificate schemes such as LEED, BREEAM, HQE, and DGNB. Ecofys then developed a custom-made solution for the client that fits to McDonald´s stores needs and offers a truly sustainable building standard across all European climates.

Our work provided McDonald’s with a transparent instrument to steer their building policy. Defining a silver, gold and platinum level of measures, Ecofys supplied McDonald’s with a clear list of options to aim for per store. The guideline has been a great success: more than 4,000 stores have implemented energy efficiency, renewable energy or water saving measures.

Glad to further support McDonald’s Europe on their sustainable pathway, Ecofys updated the guideline in 2015. We adjusted the gold and platinum levels by adding new sustainable measures and enriching them with the latest innovative technologies as well as regulative and cost developments.
