Life Cycle Assessment of Alpro Plain Calcium Soy Drink

Alpro is the European based group in Belgium that produces plant-based food and drink products. Alpro wants to document and communicate the environmental performance of its soy drinks and other plant-based products with a focus on climate change, land use and water depletion. In that context also a comparison is made between soy drink and dairy milk in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK. Target audiences are consumers, retailers, investors and other stakeholders of Alpro.

Ecofys was commissioned by Alpro in 2015 to conduct a cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to analyse the environmental impacts of Alpro Plain Calcium Soy drink. This study has been conducted and independently externally reviewed according to the requirements of ISO 14044 on LCA.

The analysis has been made on the basis of “one litre of packaged, delivered and consumed product in 2014”. The environmental impact was calculated by using the impact assessment method ILCD 2011, which is recommended by the European Commission. The method is also part of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and Organisation Environmental Footprint (OEF) methods which are tested in the Environmental Footprint Pilot phase run by the European Commission from 2013-2016. A sensitivity analysis was carried out using the ReCiPe midpoint method.

As far as the comparison concerns, the results show that the cradle-to-grave life cycle environmental impacts of one litre consumed Alpro Plain Calcium Soy drink compares favourably to conventional dairy milk. This is also the case when comparing results on the basis of equivalent nutritional content.
