Ecofys supporting European cities to take action on the impacts of climate change

Published: 22/10/2014

Brussels, 22 October 2014 – Last week, the European Commission honoured commitment of over 100 European cities to take action on the impacts of climate change at the Mayors Adapt Signature Ceremony in Brussels. The EU initiative Mayors Adapt has been set up to engage cities on climate change adaptation and to support them in taking action. The initiative is being implemented by a consortium led by Ecofys, comprised of Climate Alliance, Fresh Thoughts and IFOK GmbH.

Mayors Adapt has already gained global recognition of its timely relevance to help cities in becoming more resilient to climate risks. Ecofys has been working with Mayor Bloomberg's office and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) who expressed their support for Mayors Adapt in a video message at last week's signing ceremony in Brussels. These interventions and cities’ latest actions in adaptation showcased can be viewed at www.mayors-adapt.eu.

Sarah Hendel-Blackford, project manager at Ecofys concludes, “It is the first pan-European initiative to support cities in leading the way on adaptation to climate change. It is aimed at addressing the need for a vertically integrated approach to action on urban resilience and adaptation in the EU”.

Since October 2013 Ecofys has been supporting the Directorate General CLIMA in the strategic development and launch of the Mayors Adapt initiative, including online technical guidance for cities on adaptation which was also presented at the signing ceremony last week.
