Joop Oude Lohuis
Location: Utrecht, Netherlands
Joop Oude Lohuis (1960) graduated from the University of Groningen in Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. He started his career at Gasunie, a major trader and gas transport company in the Netherlands. In the mid eighties natural gas was seen as the clean and safe alternative for coal and nuclear. After working for the University Institute on Chemical Technology for one year, he joined the Ministry of Environment where he stayed for the next 6 years, from 1990-1996. In this period some major steps in national and EU climate policy were prepared and implemented, e.g. taxation on carbon and energy content for gas and electricity and long term agreements with industry. Another period with the energy industry followed where the energy market was liberalised and privatised.
From 2000-2010 he joined the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency where he extended his working area to global evaluation of sustainability. He managed a growing team of analysts to advise government leaders up to global level on climate change, land use and energy policy. As a client director in Ecofys he is responsible for all assignments that are carried out in the area of energy and carbon efficiency, renewables and policy evaluation for corporate clients.
