Energy from biomass and organic residues is crucial for reaching renewable energy and bio-based economy ambitions. Biomass provides a wide range of options such as  renewable transport fuels, feedstock for the chemical industry, renewable electricity and heat or steam and green gas.

Bioenergy has received a great deal of attention from the public and policy makers in the last decade due to the opportunities it offers as a renewable energy source. In all renewable energy scenarios biomass, and it’s conversion to feedstock, raw materials and energy, plays a crucial role. For instance, in the transport sector biofuels are currently the only source of renewable energy that can be easily integrated into the existing fuels infrastructure. In the longer term, biofuels are expected to play an important role in the transport sector, as there are few alternatives for aviation, shipping and long-distance trucking. For the electricity and heat sector, bioenergy is one of the most economic options, ensuring a reliable supply at any time of the day, regardless of weather conditions.

Securing a biomass project, for renewable energy or the biobased economy, certainly is a challenge. The sustainability of the feedstock is a risk. The availability of the biomass is crucial. And besides all this a bankable project means that technology and planning are key to realising goals.
