| Ecofys selected for European Commission emission trading scheme (EU ETS) assignment
Utrecht, January 26th 2009 - Ecofys has been appointed to assist the European Commission in further preparing the revised EU ETS before it comes into force in 2013. Ecofys will be working in collaboration with both the Öko-Institute and the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI.
Ecofys and its partners will play a key role in supporting the Commission in determining the amount of emission allowances that companies will receive from the EU ETS from 2013 onwards. Under the revised ETS, the rules for free allocation of emission allowances will change considerably compared to the current system. Free allocation will be based to a large extent on benchmarks; that is, a certain number of allowances will be given per unit of expected productive output. The group led by Ecofys will support the Commission in the design of these benchmarks and will also submit a proposed framework for shaping industry involvement in the process during the transition to the new scheme.
Leading the project, Maarten Neelis a senior consultant at Ecofys commented: “We are delighted to continue supporting the Commission on this challenging but crucial project – the revised ETS is at the heart of the new Climate Action and Renewable Energy Package. Ecofys is a leading knowledge provider in the area of climate change – we advise government and industry around the world and are in a unique position to be able to facilitate greater understanding between the two.”
