Ecofys launches European project to promote the use of alternative fuel vehicles
Today Ecofys – together with its European partners – launches PROCURA. The aim of this project is to remove current barriers to switching to alternative fuels such as biofuels and natural gas.
In line with its policy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the security of Europe’s energy supply, the European Union has set a target of 20% for substitution of conventional fuels for road vehicles with alternative forms.
However, the market for Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) is still very much a niche. Market expansion is being obstructed by a number of structural obstacles, such as a lack of infrastructure, a shortage of maintenance and repair facilities, insufficient awareness of their potential among fleet managers and consumers, higher purchase costs and the lack of a second-hand market.
The strategy of PROCURA is to remove the remaining obstacles to large-scale introduction of AFVs. For example by developing a second-hand market for AFVs, introducing green lease contracts, providing economic calculation models and helping fleet managers build an alternative fuel infrastructure. Ford, the European Natural Gas Vehicle Association and Terberg Leasing are among the companies and organizations participating in the PROCURA project alongside Ecofys.
