Ecofys opens office in Turkey

UTRECHT, 30 MAY 2006 – Over the past two years Ecofys has carried out a number of sustainable energy projects in Turkey. Based on this experience and promising prospects for energy efficiency and bio-energy projects, Ecofys has opened an office in Istanbul to provide the Turkish market with sustainable energy solutions.

Sustainable energy in the spotlight
Rapid growth of the economy, soaring energy costs, strong international competition and environmental concerns have put renewable energy and energy conservation in the spotlight in Turkey. Fluctuations in oil prices and recent problems with natural gas procurement have made the evaluation of cheap, clean and national renewable energy options inevitable in Turkey, where 50% of all electricity generation depends on natural gas. Moreover, Turkey, as an EU candidate country, will be committed to fulfil its international obligations to counteract climate change. As a result, Turkey’s first law on renewable energy came into force in mid-2005 and new energy efficiency legislation is currently under discussion in the Grand National Assembly.

Sustainable energy solutions
Ecofys has been active in Turkey for two years now. Haluk Sayar, country manager of Ecofys Turkey explains the reasons for this involvement: “Turkey has a sunny climate and a thriving hotel industry. We have been working with the hotel sector on identifying energy and water saving opportunities. We will also help these companies implement measures to realise energy savings. Measures could include solar water heating and seawater cooling –both very attractive and cost-effective ways of reducing energy costs and projecting an environmental friendly attitude.”

Another promising area in which Ecofys will contribute its expertise is bio energy. A country such as Turkey, where 40 % of the population still live in rural areas, has a large biomass potential. There are numerous opportunities for bio-energy projects, where costs can be reduced by converting waste into energy (e.g. from agriculture and food industries), while at the same time solving waste-disposal problems.

Sayar: “I am pleased that we can benefit from Ecofys’ extensive European experience and network of experts in sustainable energy and I am looking forward to contribute to improving the efficiency and sustainability of our clients’ energy supply.”
