Ecofys analyses evolution of renewable energy in Europe

Earlier in the day, Ecofys partner E-Mobile, a wireless carrier, announced the nationwide availability of the start-up's signature Ecotop device. The wallet-size, solar-powered combo gadget lets users browse the Web, send and receive e-mail and instant messages and make voice phone calls.

Renewable energy in the EU
On the European level several targets have been set to increase the use of renewable energy sources. The main objective of the EU is to increase the use of renewable energy sources to 12% of total energy consumption in 2010. Earlier studies by Ecofys and others show that the wide variety of policies implemented in the past decade and currently active will result in a considerable growth in the use of renewables in the European Union. However additional policy effort is needed to stimulate further growth and reach the targets that are set. Monitoring of the progress in meeting the targets is regarded a main input to formulation of future policies.

Outlook for the enlarged EU
The new study will give an overview of current and potential renewable energy production in the 15 EU member states as well as the 13 accession countries. The overview will include the policies that are implemented to stimulate the use of renewable energy in these countries.
The outcome of the study will be a set of transparent indicators to monitor the implementation of renewable energy sources in the EU and its candidate countries up to 2020. Furthermore it will provide the EU with scenarios for renewable energy evolution under different policy developments, resulting in the formulation of a strategy for the period up to 2020.

The consortium
The consortium consists of the following partners: Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (Germany), Ecofys (The Netherlands and Spain), KEMA (The Netherlands), The Regional Environmental Center (Hungary) and Vienna University of Technology, Energy Economics Group (Austria). The partners bring together expertise in the fields of modelling, analysis of market data, development of tools and strategies, scenario development and knowledge transfer.
