Besides CO2, there are five other important (groups of) greenhouse gases: CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs and SF6. These gases have a greater potential to contribute to global warming (per unit of emissions) than CO2 – 21x in the case of CH4 and 23,900x in the case of SF6.
CH4 and N2O occur naturally in the atmosphere, HFCs, PFCs and SF6 are mainly man-made gases. Due to their higher Global Warming Potential, relatively small emissions of non-CO2 greenhouse gases (GHGs) can have considerable climate change effects . While energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy are effective strategies for reducing CO2 emissions, very specific knowledge about emissions sources and reduction technologies is necessary in the case of non-CO2 GHGs.
