The project-based mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol, the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) are developing rapidly.
For both governments and private companies (e.g. those operating within the European Emissions Trading System, EU ETS) these mechanisms provide an opportunity to achieve emission reduction targets at lower cost. For project developers, it provides additional revenues because emission reduction credits can be sold. For host countries CDM/JI offers the benefits of sustainable development and technology transfer. Given the large financial interests involved, it is important to safeguard the environmental integrity of the mechanisms to ensure that, overall, emissions are reduced.
We have been an active player in the CDM/JI market since the initial design of the system. Our broad range of customers include project developers and technology suppliers, buyers and sellers (both public and private), market intermediairies, governments, the UNFCCC and NGOs. We have multi-stakeholder experience, an international presence as well as a good understanding of the larger policy context. This context includes relations with international climate negotiations, the EU ETS and the voluntary carbon market.
